Understanding Food Labels: Your Key to Healthier Food Choices

Congratulations! You have started your health and fitness journey and decided it’s time to update your eating habits. You’ve thrown out the foods you’ve deemed unhealthy at home and now you’re at the grocery store. Where to begin? You grab all the fresh fruits and veggies you need from the fresh foods section. That was pretty easy. No esteemed nutritionist is going to expect you to immediately change your diet to fresh fruits and veggies unless you want to undergo the yo-yo effect. You know that you are making lifestyle changes and know you’re going to need to purchase some packaged foods, so you start heading to the center aisles of your grocery store.

You can’t eat your regular go-to cereal anymore and want to find healthier comfort foods, but it is beginning to feel overwhelming as you’re navigating the aisles of your grocery store. With countless food options, all making bold marketing claims across every aisle, how do you know what’s actually healthy? The answer lies in one of the most powerful tools for your health journey: food labels. These small boxes of information hold the key to making informed, healthier choices that can change the way you fuel your body.

Why Understanding Food Labels Matters

We’ve all been there—reaching for a product that promises to be “low-fat,” “natural,” “sugar-free,” or “plant-based,” thinking we’re making a healthy choice. But when you take a closer look, you might find hidden sugars, artificial additives, and unhealthy fats lurking behind the label. Learning how to read and interpret food labels allows you to be in control of what goes into your body. It’s a simple but life-changing skill that helps you to:

- Avoid sneaky ingredients

- Choose nutrient-dense foods

- Manage your portion sizes

- Reach your health goals

The best part? It’s easier than you think.

Food Label

Breaking Down the Basics: What to Look For

When you flip over a package and see that nutrition label, it can feel like a wall of numbers and confusing terms. But with a little guidance, it becomes a powerful tool for your health.

1. Serving Size

The serving size is the foundation of the nutrition label. It tells you how much of the product the numbers on the label apply to. Note that a package may contain multiple servings. If you eat double the serving size, you’re consuming double the calories, fat, and other nutrients listed!

2. Calories

Calories provide a measure of the energy you get from a serving of the food. Whether you’re looking to maintain, lose, or gain weight, this number can help you manage your daily intake. Remember, not all calories are created equal—focus on foods that offer more nutritional value for the calories you’re consuming.

3. Fats

The fats section can be one of the trickiest to understand. Look for foods with healthy fats like unsaturated fats, which support heart health. Avoid trans fats at all costs—they’re linked to heart disease and inflammation. Aim to limit saturated fats as well, but don't fear them completely; they can be part of a balanced diet.

4. Sodium

Sodium is something most processed foods have too much of. High sodium intake can lead to high blood pressure and other health issues. Keep an eye on this number, especially in processed and canned foods.

5. Sugar

This is where the label can reveal hidden surprises. Many foods, even savory ones, are packed with added sugars. Always check for added sugars separately from natural sugars. Natural sugars in fruit aren’t the problem. The refined, added sugars are the ones that can lead to weight gain, diabetes, and other health problems.

6. Fiber

Fiber is your friend. It helps with digestion, stabilizes blood sugar, and keeps you feeling fuller longer. Look for products with higher fiber content, especially in whole grains, fruits, and vegetables.

7. Vitamins and Minerals

A good food label will highlight the vitamins and minerals a product contains, such as Vitamin D, calcium, iron, and potassium. These nutrients are essential for your body’s functions, from bone strength to immune health. Aim for foods that provide a healthy dose of these micronutrients.

8. Ingredient List

Most of us tend to look over the long list of ingredients in our favorite snacks once we glance at the bolded calorie amount at the top of the food label. However, looking at the ingredient list can help you spot ingredients you might not want in your body, which are not necessarily visible on the food label. One common recommendation is to avoid foods with ingredients you cannot pronounce. These are most often going to be food colorants, artificial flavors, and preservatives. If you are purposely avoiding certain allergenic food items, it is helpful to look at the bolded or italicized words on some ingredient lists, as well as the bolded section at the end of the ingredient list that starts with "Contains:".

Beware of Buzzwords

Food packaging is designed to grab your attention with phrases like “low-fat,” “gluten-free,” or “organic.” While these can be helpful in guiding your choices, they aren’t always the full picture. For instance,

• Low-fat products might be high in sugar to compensate for flavor.

• Gluten-free doesn’t automatically mean healthy, especially if the product is processed.

• Organic foods are grown without synthetic pesticides, but they can still be high in sugars or unhealthy fats.

The key is to read the whole label and not rely solely on marketing claims.

Making Healthier Choices Starts Today

Food labels are like roadmaps—they guide you to better decisions if you know how to read them. By understanding what’s inside the foods you eat, you empower yourself to make choices that support your health, energy levels, and overall well-being. Start small: choose one or two products during your next grocery run and take a closer look. With time, reading labels will become second nature, and you’ll be able to confidently fill your cart with healthier and fresher foods.

Remember, your health is in your hands. Every label is an opportunity to choose better, feel better, and live better.

Ready to start? Next time you pick up a product, let the label do the talking—and let your choices reflect the healthy, vibrant life you deserve.
